Nearly 1,200 participants attended JavaLand 2025 at Nürburgring from April 1 to 3.

Unconference

Before JavaLand 2025 really got underway, an unconference was held the day before on March 31. Participants discussed various topics in a relaxed atmosphere with like-minded people and got in the mood for the next few days of the conference.

For those who wanted to feel a rush of adrenaline before everyone else, the go-kart track was already available. Challenging combinations of bends, braking maneuvers and full-throttle passages – some were already chasing the track record in their e-karts and getting a thrill.

JavaLand4Kids

The young developers of tomorrow were once again able to discover programming in a fun way. This time, JavaLand4Kids was organized and carried out by Rewe Digital. Primary school children as well as middle and high school students got to take their first steps into the world of programming in various age-appropriate workshops.

Keynotes & Program

After the early bird sessions, which were already very well attended at 8:30 am, Fried Saacke, iJUG Chairman of the Board and DOAG CEO, officially opened JavaLand with his welcome session. He welcomed the participants, presented the program for the next few days, revealed a few interesting key facts and introduced the following keynote session by Adam Bien.

With his humorous and relaxed manner, Adam Bien impressively addressed the most important milestones from 30 years of Java in his keynote speech and picked up on many buzzwords, which he embellished with anecdotes. He also looked into the future of Java and its challenges, particularly with a focus on the Java ecosystem.

Afterwards, visitors had access to a large number of presentations throughout the day, which were divided into twelve topic streams. This year's topics included “Core Java”, “Architecture”, “Methodology & Culture”, “Server-side Java”, “Programming Languages”, “Security”, “Quality & Testing”, “Containers, Cloud & Infrastructure”, “UI & UX”, “AI & Data”, ‘Innovation’ and “Tooling”. The varied program managed to fully inspire the participants. Both renowned experts and promising newcomers shared their know-how, practical experience and numerous tips with the Java community.

In the breaks between the presentations, many took the opportunity to visit the exhibition in the ring°boulevard. The 17 exhibitors presented themselves with fascinating discussions, interactive activities and entertaining challenges – with great prizes to be won. The new exhibitor rally also contributed to this. Participants were able to collect stamps after talking to the exhibitors and thus qualify for a prize draw. The main prize was a robot vacuum cleaner from Vorwerk and was awarded live on the afternoon of the second day. The second place winner was able to shop to their hearts content with a 250-euro voucher for REWE. For third place, there was plenty of Java reading in store in the form of 10 selected books from dpunkt and Rheinwerk. Fourth and fifth place received an annual subscription to Java aktuell.

Live Studio

The studio team from the community accompanied the program on the main stage with plenty of charm and humour and provided an entertaining program between the presentations with interviews, quizzes with great prizes and much more. Those who stayed at home were also able to follow the events on the main stage via the free live stream. There were up to 800 concurrent viewers watching – wow!

Entertainment & Evening Event

Those who wanted to unwind after the intensive presentations found numerous opportunities for relaxation and entertainment in the varied supporting program. In addition to the aforementioned kart track, the track walks were a particular highlight. On these tours around the race track, guides provided fascinating insights and surprising facts about the legendary sections of the circuit. Participants were able to experience the unique atmosphere of the famous “Green Hell” up close.

In the race simulator, participants were able to virtually race around the track under similar conditions. They were able to set their own best time or compete with others for victory in Grand Prix mode.

The backstage tours were ideal for those who wanted a more relaxed experience. Here, those interested could take a look behind the scenes. Whether in the paddock, in the pit lane or with the journalists in the Media Center during a race weekend – here they learned fun and exciting facts and anecdotes and got another glimpse of the legendary track.

On the evening of the first day, DJ Neils got people dancing and singing between the exhibitor stands. Visitors celebrated the evening as a community with cold drinks and rock and pop hits as well as hip-hop late into the night.

Training Day

The Training Day on Thursday marked the traditional end of JavaLand. In ten all-day workshops, both beginners and advanced users were able to delve deep into their respective subject areas. The program this time included training on migration to the cloud, Hibernate, Java full-stack development, DDD Strategic Design, Java with AI on Azure Container Apps and Kubernetes as well as many other exciting topics.
